Governor Whitmer has issued Executive Order 2020-153 requiring masks in all indoor spaces and crowded outdoor spaces.
While there is an exemption for parishioners who “remove a mask while engaging in religious worship at a house of religious worship,” diocesan guidelines require parishioners wear a mask when participating in the celebration of Mass or a sacrament. If a parishioner arrives without a mask, please politely ask them to put one on. If they refuse, it is recommended that you direct them to a special ‘non-mask’ section of the church.
This executive order does mean that participants must now wear a mask while participating in parish programming outdoors if they are unable to maintain a proper social distance. The original recommendation from the diocese was that masks were encouraged, but not required outdoors.
